GVHH can affect the skin, stomach and intestines, liver, and even other parts of the body. It can range from mild to life threatening seriousness.

Mucositis is a common side effect of full density allogenic and autologous transplants and wound on the mouth surface. It is similar to aphtha sores, but it is more common in the mouth and throat and makes it difficult to eat and drink. This effect is temporary and resolves without discharge from the hospital after transplantation. Medication can be used to reduce pain.
