You will receive chemotherapy with or without radiation to prepare your body for a transplant. This treatment destroys sick cells in your body. Treatment also destroys the immune system so that it doesn't reject blood-forming cells and new cells in your bone marrow to make room for new future cells.
Some patients receive preparatory therapies with lower doses of chemotherapy, with or without lower doses of radiation. This treatment is called low intensity, does not destroy bone marrow or mini transplant. This option also makes it possible to transplant in patients who are unable to withstand the standard high-dose schedule.
