Wrinkle treatment, wrinkle smoothing with botulinum toxin A
It
is a neurotoxin, a poison that affects the nerve pathways. With
botulinum toxin A you can treat facial wrinkles. These are wrinkles that
are caused by the tension in certain facial muscles. Botulinum toxin A
interrupts the nerve stimulus to the muscle, and the muscle relaxes.
This releases the pressure and smoothes the fold.
How does a wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin A work?
A detailed, comprehensive explanation always precedes the treatment of
wrinkles with botulinum toxin A. It is important that blood-thinning
medications are stopped beforehand. This prevents bruising and hematoma
in the skin. The patient sits during wrinkle treatment. The procedure
only takes about 5 minutes. Depending on the region being treated,
between 5 and 30 stitches are placed and a tiny dose of botulinum toxin A
is injected into specific areas. The small injections are not entirely
painless, but they are tolerable.
How is the individual dose determined?
The
dose injected with a botox treatment is different each time because it
always depends on the individual circumstances. The dose depends mainly
on the contraction strength of the facial muscles that trigger the
wrinkle. This contraction differs in face from region to region, but
also from person to person. For example, a man with fairly strong facial
muscles will need significantly more botulinum toxin A than e.g. in
people with poorly developed facial muscles. But there are also women
with strong facial muscles, and then it may be that the dose required is
sometimes higher than that normally used in a man. The dosage of the
remedy is difficult, and the treating doctor has to rely on his
experience and judgment. In the first stage of treatment, the dose is
chosen to be very low to be on the safe side. After about two weeks, a
check-up by the attending doctor is carried out and the result is
closely examined. If necessary, a little botulinum toxin A can then be
injected again.
After stopping the botox treatment, the treated facial area is cooled
so that it swells faster. Slight redness can occur, which can be easily
painted over, so that the treated person is ready for the public again
after about 15 minutes.
When does botulinum toxin A show its effects?
Botulinum
toxin A does not show its effect immediately. The first effects are not
visible until 2-3 days after injecting the product, and they become
more and more pronounced afterwards. The effect reaches its maximum
after about 5 – 6 weeks and then lasts for 3 – 4 months. Then it
subsides. After about 3 months, the facial muscles slowly start to work
again, but the wrinkles are far from being raised.
Does the face look mask-like after the wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin A?
I
advise my patients to have only so many facial wrinkles treated with
botulinum toxin A that a large part of the facial expressions can still
be used. However, there are patients who want a face with total wrinkle
smoothing, but accept a rigid facial expression without mines.
