A successful bone marrow or cord blood transplant can prolong and heal life. It is the treatment of choice for many patients and may be the best and sometimes the only option for survival.
A transplant benefits patient in two main ways:
• Transplant makes it possible to treat resistant cancers with very high doses of chemotherapy. This explains how autologous transplantation is used to combat some types of cancer, such as lymphoma.
• Allogenic (using someone else's cells) transplantation also treats resistant cancers and also helps to recognize and destroy cancer cells using the donor's immune system.
Allogenic transplant is also used to replace diseases that are not cancer and sickle cell anemia, by replacing broken cells in the bone marrow.
